Alfonso Guzman knows the value of a safe and healthy home

“I didn’t have a kitchen or anything … They have done good work and I feel good!” (Translated from Spanish, in which the interview took place.) The importance of a safe and healthy home is even more critical as most of us are forced to shelter-at-home. What is an inconvenience for many is a true catastrophe for thousands of Philadelphia homeowners living in unsafe and unhealthy homes. That’s where Rebuilding Together Philadelphia (RTP) comes in:

You can hear the change in Alfonso Guzman’s voice over the phone. The previous tone of distrust and negativity have been transformed into hope and gratitude. Mr. Guzman, 78, had reason to be wary. As a disabled senior with cancer who lives alone, he speaks no English and is on a fixed income; Alfonso Guzman is among the city’s most vulnerable citizens. He had a dilapidated kitchen ceiling that was damaged as the result of a roof leak, the kitchen subfloor was severely rotted, and the stove didn’t work.

However, because RTP staff had a relationship with him and were able to converse with him in Spanish, the essential repairs were quickly completed. Our construction team was able to reinforce the kitchen walls with new framing, patch the ceiling, repair the sub-flooring and install a working stove at no cost to Mr. Guzman. His house is once again a refuge.
